Our community meets once a year, typically every spring, at a different host city/institution. The body of attendees mainly consists of PIs and affiliates of current and past REU Sites that are/were supported by the CISE Directorate. Additionally, relevant NSF officers also attend the event. Participation of prospective REU PIs, that is, individuals that may be interested in submitting a proposal to the REU program under CISE in the near future, is highly encouraged; the meeting registration fees are rather modest. The primary goal of this meeting is to bring together all the stakeholders of the particular program, encourage and facilitate the exchange of experiences and ideas among our community members and to showcase accomplishments
Each meeting typically lasts 2-3 days and is comprised of presentation sessions, panel discussions, seminars, poster sessions, informational briefs and social events. During the meeting several presentations take place, whether form individuals or from the Working Groups, which are small teams of PIs focusing on a particular aspect of the REU summer experience. The Working Groups convene during break-out sessions and compile material that is later presented to all attendees. Moreover, seminars may cover a range of various topics to educate the audience, like how to effectively talk to students about ethics, etc. Panel discussions are often held to solicit opinions and share experiences also on a variety of REU program related issues. During the poster session PIs exhibit their best student poster; after voting, the overall best poster receives an award from our community. Finally, during breaks and meals attendees typically interact with each other in an informal fashion.
