Peer Mentoring, contributed by Scott Thede, DePauw University

  • Idea: To allow REU participants to be mentored by other undergraduate students. This is particularly useful when (a) graduate students are not available to serve as mentors, and (b) when students from the host institution are also participating in the program (these students will serve as mentors).
  • Objective: To provide mentoring to students from their peers.
  • What Works Well: Local students can provide information and guidance to other students at the program. They can show other students "the ropes."
  • What Doesn't Work Well: The peer mentors cannot substitute for "real" mentoring (provided by faculty members at our institution).
  • Assessment Data: None.
