Idea: Prepare students for research; many students like to do programming only and make their last priority reading research papers and writing up their results; an REU site is the right place to nurture students on how to review and write research papers.
Objective: Prepare students for writing a research paper/technical poster
What works well: See the 2-page handout summarizing what worked well at the MedIX site; 87% of the students participating in the program had at least one research paper or technical poster presented at a conference
What doesn’t work well: Assuming that providing feedback on writing is over at the end of the REU program
Assessment data: Answers on students’ surveys showed that the students join our site mostly because they want to have a research publication that they can present at a conference and can help them with acceptance into graduate schools
