Tracking Students
From CISEREUPI
Tracking Student Participants Afterwards 2011
What to Track:
- Did they complete the research project?
- Did they graduate from their home institution? If so, did they graduate in a CISE/STEM field?
- Did they go to graduate school? If so, was it for a Masters or a PhD? If so, did they complete that graduate degree?
- What is their research activity?
How Long to Track:
- This answer is determined by the answers to the above questions.
- The PIs can track for the duration of the REU funding.
- Longer term tracking would require NSF intervention and funding.
How to Track:
- Up until now, tracking has been ad hoc across sites.
- What is the PI's responsibility in tracking students after the program is over. If funding for a site ends, who will track the students?
Tips for Tracking Students After They Leave:
- Collect cell phone and contact info at first meeting. Particularly "permanent" e-mail addresses, if students have them.
- Create Facebook and/or LinkedIn groups for the REU program. Could "force" students to join, but less extreme to simply post information on the groups that makes it valuable for the students to join.
- Have students sign form at the beginning of the program, and have the form include a section that they agree to be tracked and provide information for a period of time after the program ends.
- Provide part of their stipend only if they present their work somewhere.
